They bear the responsibility of both keeping our stories alive for future generations as well as learning from their elders, all the stories that make us who we are. This discussion will focus on the unique Aboriginal culture and how it is viewed by its youth. We often see and hear stories that illustrate the Aboriginal culture and its stories are prized and nurtured within the Aboriginal home – do the young people see that as true and if so, is that something they plan on continuing with their own children? Perhaps those young people who are, in fact, growing up in a culturally rich environment can share some stories with the audience? What cultural struggles do they see themselves facing every day? In their own opinions, what is the fate of their culture’s future? Do they see themselves playing an important role in keeping it alive? In their own words, let’s hear what they need to maintain cultural strength in the years to come. There will be one panel focusing on Aboriginal music and one panel focusing on Aboriginal film and television. The Film Panel will take place on Thursday, April 29th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The Music Panel will take place on Thursday, April 29th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Panelists – Aboriginal Film: Suzanne Shawbonquit Paul M. We’d like to take this opportunity to hear from today’s youth, just how important it is to them to use these art forms to tell their stories. Do they get most of their cultural education from music and films? Or is their culture something that is mainly nurtured in the home and schools? How important is it to them that these stories are told and that they stay alive for future generations? In their opinions, what do they think the future holds for the Francophone culture? Do they foresee any future struggles in keeping their cultural histories alive and thriving? Ideally this forum will be a place for them to voice their own opinions and create a dialogue with the panel of industry leaders.
